At the second meeting of the Social Studies Group on Food (GESA), Alexis Sossa (CISS) and Manuel Zoccola (Institute of Sociology, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) presented the talk “Dialogue and Sports Supplementation: Reflections from the Social Sciences.” In their presentation, they addressed the phenomenon of supplement consumption not only as a strategy to improve physical performance but also as a practice deeply embedded with social and cultural meanings.

Through this lens, Sossa and Zoccola emphasized the need to critically examine the growing use of supplements and substances in sports, particularly in light of their potential normalization. This phenomenon, they argued, is not merely individual or technical, but profoundly shaped by the values a society attaches to the body, success, and performance.

The event was organized by the Social Studies Group on Food (GESA), a collaborative initiative between the University of Los Lagos, the University of Chile, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. The group aims to foster interdisciplinary discussions on the many dimensions of food in contemporary society.
