On August 5, researcher Alexis Sossa Rojas presented his paper titled “Bodies in the Capitalocene: Consumption, Exclusion, and Gratification in Fitness Culture” as part of the 5th Latin American Congress of Social Theory, held virtually from Bogotá, Colombia. His presentation was part of Panel 74: Sociology of the Body and Emotions, organized by the Body and Emotions Studies Group at the University of Chile.
Sossa’s talk explored how consumption dynamics within fitness culture reproduce exclusion and forms of bodily gratification, within the context of the Capitalocene—a concept that enables analysis of the global capitalist system’s impact on bodies, emotions, and the environment.
The Congress, convened by CLACSO and several Latin American universities, focused on the theoretical and methodological challenges posed by today’s socio-environmental crisis. It created a plural and critical space for reflection from Latin America on issues such as climate change, bodily domination, and new forms of coloniality.
