The political landscape of Latin America has historically been marked by cycles of crisis and instability. However, the current era presents an intensified social, political, and cultural polarization, fueled by digital platforms, media fragmentation, and the rise of populist leaders from both the left and the right. In this complex scenario, social movements emerge as key actors in the defense of rights, democratic values, and inclusion.
The book Crossroads of Resistance in Latin America: Social Movements in Times of Crisis and Polarization, edited by Camila Ponce Lara, Natalia Miranda, Benjamín Tejerina, and Camilo Tamayo Gómez, analyzes this reality from multiple perspectives, reflecting on the challenges and possibilities faced by social movements in the region.
This work has its roots in the conference Social Movements and Globalization: A Latin American Perspective on Challenges in the Region, held at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain. Dr. Natalia Miranda, a researcher at CISS and a member of the executive board of the RC48 Social Movements, Collective Action and Social Change Committee of the International Sociological Association (ISA), was part of the organizing committee for this event.
We invite you to explore this analysis of Latin American social movements and their role in a context of crisis and polarization.
