This research, led by Alexis Sossa, researcher at CISS, addresses the growing concern about the aging population in urban contexts and how urban environment conditions influence the participation of older adults in physical activities. The study, conducted over nine months in the communes of San Joaquín and Ñuñoa in Santiago, Chile, examines how inequalities in access to safe and suitable spaces affect the perception of safety and well-being, and how these perceptions condition the physical activity of this demographic group.
The work was based on collecting life stories and experiences from 40 older adults (10 men and 30 women) who regularly engage in physical activities, as well as two instructors who guide classes for older adults. Data was obtained through observations, interviews, and field notes, providing an in-depth view of how older adults relate to the urban environment and how these factors influence their emotional and physical well-being.
The study highlights that the "walkability" of the urban environment, understood as the ease of movement and the perception of safety in public spaces, is crucial for motivating older adults to leave their homes and participate in physical activities. However, the lack of adequate infrastructure and limited access to green spaces can create a sense of injustice and exclusion, negatively impacting the health and quality of life of this group.
The findings of this research provide a key perspective for the design of public policies and urban planning strategies that promote active and healthy aging, focusing on the creation of inclusive, accessible, and safe urban environments. This research emphasizes the importance of considering the emotions and sensitivities of older adults in the design of public spaces, which not only enhances their physical well-being but also their mental and social health.
