Researcher Sarahí Rueda-Salazar appeared on CNN Chile in a report about the country’s declining birth rate. Beyond being a demographic issue, the drop in birth rates is closely linked to structural changes in society.

Today, there is greater access to education, family planning, and the labor market, which expands life choices and delays motherhood. At the same time, the rising cost of living and the lack of policies supporting parenting make it more difficult for many families to decide to have children.

Unlike in past decades, when motherhood was seen as an almost inevitable step, other priorities—such as professional development, financial stability, and personal well-being—now influence the decision to become a mother. However, the lack of policies that facilitate work-life balance remains a challenge for those who do wish to have children.

This phenomenon not only affects demographic growth but also raises concerns about population aging and the sustainability of social security systems. Addressing declining birth rates from a comprehensive perspective is key to designing effective strategies that meet the real needs of the population.
