A recent study by Diego Palacios exploring how depression affects adolescents' perception of social relationships has been highlighted in Cooperativa Ciencia. The research examines how adolescents with depressive symptoms might misinterpret their acceptance and rejection ties with peers, exaggerating the negative ones and underestimating the positive ones.
The social network analysis applied in this study offers a unique level of detail by exploring how each student perceives their peers. Unlike other approaches that usually focus on general perceptions, such as the collective view of the class, this study analyzes the individual perception of each student about each of their classmates. This allows for a deeper understanding of perceived dynamics of acceptance and rejection within the group, providing a more accurate perspective on social relationships, explained Diego Palacios, one of the study's authors.
